An evening of Beer & Chocolate.

Join us for an evening of tasty beer and hand crafted chocolates at the Free Trade. To showcase the kegged version of our latest and hugely popular special, Summer Breeze, we are teaming up with Davenport's Chocolates to pair a couple of our beers with a selection of their delicious chocolates.

Brewed using ginger and lemongrass, at 3.9% Summer Breeze is the perfect beer for lazy summer evenings, packed full of flavour yet light and refreshing. We have been planning this event since Davenport's suggested our beer would be great paired with their Ginger and Lemongrass truffles, via the local networking hashtag #northeasthour. The response was huge, so we had to make this happen.

As a compliment to the summery flavours of Summer Breeze with the Ginger and Lemongrass truffles, you will be able to enjoy our Mocha Milk Stout alongside the luxurious combination of a vanilla fudge and a coffee cream. A packet containing one each of the three chocolates will be available from the bar for only £1.70, and there will be a wide range of Tyne Bank ales on draft for you to enjoy. Tempted? Get yourself down to the Free Trade Inn on Wednesday 6th August from 7pm for these tasty treats. Both ourselves and Davenport's will be there for a chat and to answer any questions you may have about our products.

The Free Trade's popular weekly quiz will start at 9pm, with prizes from both ourselves and Davenport's, so you can make an evening of it!

Mocha Milk Stout Brewday.

Today we brewed one of our favourite beers. Mocha Milk Stout is a big beer, one of the strongest we brew, and boasts the highest amount of ingredients of any of our ales. This 6% stout uses a complex malt bill with a blend of the finest dark malts, and is flavoured with Brazilian Coffee.

The coffee we use was selected and roasted by Pumphreys of Newcastle, who's history can be traced back to the year 1750. With so many years of experience they were able to select the perfect coffee for Mocha Milk Stout. But a mocha isn't just about coffee, we use 100% pure cocoa powder to provide a rich, chocolate character which is balanced perfectly with the coffee.

But why is called a 'Milk Stout'? The addition of a non-fermenting lactose sugar to the beer gives a silky sweet taste which enhances the chocolate notes, and compliments the light bitterness from the coffee. Finally, the addition of whole vanilla pods late in the process adds an extra level of flavour.

The goods.

The best way to get the flavour of the coffee in, without clogging up the brew kit, is in tights!

Looks strange I know, but it works! The tights of coffee are left in the underback for a few minutes each to get the perfect amount of flavour out.

Mocha Milk Stout will be available in cask from the 21st of July, and in keg a few weeks after. We currently have some bottles in stock, so come down to the brewery shop and grab some, only £2.50 each. Dark beers aren't just for winter.

July special - Summer Breeze.

Our brand new special for July is Summer Breeze. Like a welcome breeze in the summer heat, this 3.9% light pale ale refreshes and quenches your thirst. Brewed using authentic Asian root ginger and lemongrass for a subtle kick, with a blend of Chinook, Centennial and Kohatu hops for a moderate bitterness and citrus notes.

We first previewed a prototype of this beer at our 3rd Birthday party in May, and after adjusting the recipe based on the feedback from the prototype we are really excited about how it's tasting.

Summer Breeze will be available in cask from this week, and a limited amount in keg later in the month which will be perfect in the sunshine.

You can see some photos from the brewday here.
